Military success was important to be commemorated as it made the country and the sovereign more powerful and influential. These type of medallions are often full of detail, showing scenes of the battle on land, or naval engagements at sea. The famous Mudie series, issued in 1820, depicts battles between Britain and Napoleon, and consists of forty medals by British and French engravers.
